About Alcove

Supporting Women in Recovery for Nearly 50 Years

For almost 50 years, Alcove has supported women in Calgary on their journey toward recovery, safety, and renewed stability.

WHO WE ARE

A Recovery Centre for Women and Their Children

Alcove is a women’s recovery centre based in Calgary, Alberta. We support women experiencing addiction, trauma, abuse, and related life challenges through structured programming, compassionate care, and a safe environment built for healing.

Our work is grounded in the belief that recovery is not one size fits all. Women often face complex barriers to treatment, including parenting responsibilities, trauma histories, unstable housing, violence, mental health challenges, and disrupted family relationships. Alcove’s programs are designed with those realities in mind.

OUR HISTORY

Almost 50 Years of Service

Alcove’s story began in 1977, when the Grey Nuns founded Youville in Calgary as a place of safety, dignity, and healing for women experiencing addiction, trauma, and social marginalization.

As the needs of women and families evolved, so did the program, growing into a trauma-informed residential recovery centre rooted in compassion, respect, and hope.

In 2015, Youville became Alcove Addiction Recovery for Women, reflecting both growth and renewal while continuing its long-standing commitment to helping women heal, rebuild their lives, and strengthen family relationships.

WHY ALCOVE

What Makes Alcove Different

When women heal, families heal. When families heal, communities grow stronger.

That belief is the heart of our work.

Recovery for Women, Built for Real Life

We understand that every woman’s journey is unique. Our programs are trauma-informed, structured, and compassionate-designed to meet women where they are and help them build a stronger foundation for lasting recovery.

Healing That Includes Families

Addiction does not affect a woman in isolation. It impacts her children, relationships, sense of safety, and overall family stability.

Our family-focused approach allows mothers to heal while maintaining connection with their children.

Stronger Outcomes, Lasting Change

For many women, fear of separation from their children is a major barrier to seeking help. We remove that barrier and support healing for the whole family.

At Alcove, we believe healing women also helps heal families.

Our Gallery

Our Approach

At Alcove, we believe healing begins with feeling safe, seen, and respected — grounded in compassion, choice, and cultural humility.

Compassion & humility

Each woman carries her own story. We walk alongside with care, honouring where she comes from.

Indigenous healing

Wellbriety, Elder visits, healing circles, ceremony teachings — offered with humility and consent.

Art & music

Indigenous art and music enrich our home — healing can be creative, expressive, and deeply human.

Always voluntary

All cultural practices are voluntary, respectful of every woman’s beliefs and background.

"Nearly half of the women who come through our doors identify as Indigenous — we recognize this not as a statistic, but as a responsibility."

We approach Indigenous‑informed healing with humility, consent, and respect. These practices are not ours to claim, but teachings shared through relationship. The presence of an Elder is deeply valued — we are grateful for the wisdom offered to the women in our home.
Alcove is committed to cultural safety, restoring dignity, and honouring the strengths of Indigenous women — built on trust, reciprocity, and shared purpose.
